Here is my list for the best movies of last year. Most of the titles are more than a year old, but they have only been released in the country in which I have seen them this year. Please, mind the gaps. If you haven't seen these films... what are you waiting for?

9. Auf der anderen Seite (Fatih Akin)
10. Encounters at the end of the world (Werner Herzog)
Still haven’t seen Wall-E, Entre les murs, among others. I know I haven’t included any English language film… maybe next year if only The Road is half as good as the book (which I doubt).
Best actor: Mathieu Amalric in La question humaine (Nicolas Klotz)
Best actress: Kristin Scott Thomas in Il y a longtemps que je t’aime (Philippe Claudel) (even though she was too intense in the beginning) and Juliette Binoche in Flight of the red balloon
Best supporting actor: Mathieu Amalric in Un conte de Noël
Best supporting actress: Anne Consigny in Un conte de Noël and Penélpe Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Woody Allen)
Worst Movie: Indiana 4 (Steven Spielberg)
Worst Movie that I did not even have to watch to know it was bad: Australia (Baz Lurhmann)
Most over-hyped Movie: Milk (Gus Van Sant), Gomorra (Matteo Garrone), Rachel getting married (Jonathan Demme)
Worst piece of Euro Art-trash: The duchess of Langeais (Éric Rohmer) and La fille coupée en deux (Claude Chabrol)
Most boring movie: Burn after reading (Cohen bros.)
Most pleasant surprise: Ne le dis à personne (Guillaume Canet)
Most unpleasant surprise: the last two Sundance winner: Sangre de mi sangre (Christopher Zalla) and Frozen river (Courtney Hunt)
Luckily in 2009, Almodóvar, Von Trier and Haneke will be back; at least, they will be fun to watch...

Shame on me, I haven't seen any of those... My Macbook is now overwhelmed by the amount of downloads I'm setting, and it's your fault! Too many films to see...

Let me say I agree with MOST of your choices. Given the level of the films you have chosen, Les chansons d’amour is out of the question, it was a fun little thing with cute actors, but it is not a good film. I undesrtand why you loved it, but don't let love blind you.

I have to add to the list:
Un secret. I loved it. I think it was made in 2007, I don't know if it counts.
I loved you so long, I agree Kristin Scott Thomas is the best of the film but I believe it deserves a spot as one of the best films of the year.
And you have to see Wall-E.
My pleasant surprise was Slomdog Millionaire. I did not fall in love with it, but I expected less, and was pleasantly surprised. That makes it for my English language film of the year until I see The Reader, Revolutionary Road (I have high hopes) and Doubt.
And to the worst I have to add The Duchess, good idea bad film.

ReplyDeletePara mí, la mejor peli: "4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile (4 meses, 3 semanas, 2 días". segunda mejor película: "Le scaphandre et le papillon (la escafandra y la mariposa)" ex aequo "Wall-E". Peor actuación de todos los tiempos: Benoît Magimel en "La fille coupée en deux". Premio Balay a la cara más centrifugada: Nicole Kidman en "Margot at the Wedding", en la escena en que se pone a llorar. Premio al tío más bueno: Russell Crowe en "3:10 to Yuma". Mejor actuación femenina: ex aequo Sally Hawkins en "Happy go lucky" y Kristin Scott Thomas en "Il y a longtemps que je t’aime". Enhorabuena por el blog ;-D.
